New South Wales Nurse Pay & Conditions 2025–26

What NSW public-health nurses and midwives are entitled to in 2025–26 — and the levers that lift your pay beyond the base scale.

Ways to maximise your income

  • The Continuing Education Allowance is the clearest 'study pays forever' lever: a relevant postgrad diploma/degree adds $76.10/wk (~$3,957/yr) and a masters/doctorate adds $91.40/wk (~$4,753/yr) on top of base pay, indexed and paid even during paid leave — but only the single HIGHEST-value CEA is payable, and you must lodge evidence within 3 months
  • Enrolled Nurses have their own CEA: a relevant Certificate IV adds $37.20/wk (~$1,934/yr) and an Advanced Diploma of Nursing adds $46.70/wk (~$2,428/yr) — a permanent top-up many ENs never claim.
  • Salary packaging is the biggest overlooked lever: as a public-hospital employee you can package about $9,010 of everyday expenses (rent, mortgage, bills) plus about $2,650 of meal entertainment each year free of income tax — roughly $11,660 tax-free — with a novated car lease on top, and it doesn't reduce any award penalty, allowance, overtime or leave loading.
  • Night shift now pays a 20% loading (uplifted from 15% effective the first full pay period on/after 1 July 2025) — the biggest routine shift premium; weekends pay even more, with Saturday ordinary hours at time-and-a-half (150%) and Sunday at time-and-three-quarters (175%), and these REPLACE rather than stack on the shift loadings
  • The overtime 10-hour-rest rule is a powerful protection: if the employer makes you keep working without 10 consecutive hours off after qualifying overtime, you must be paid at DOUBLE RATES until released, and you still get the 10 hours off without loss of ordinary pay.
  • Guaranteed minimums for being available: on-call carries a minimum $38.08 per period ($75.92 on a rostered day off), a recall from home guarantees a minimum 4 hours at overtime rates each time even for a 5-minute task, and overtime cancelled with under 24 hours' notice still pays 4 hours at base rate.
