About
AussieClinicians is a pay and finance reference for junior doctors in Australian public hospitals. The site covers EBA and award conditions, take-home pay estimates, salary packaging, HECS/HELP repayments, and related financial topics relevant to interns, residents, and registrars.
My name is Jacob Stretton. I'm a registered nurse finishing my final year of medical school, about to start as an intern. Working in hospitals while studying meant years of dealing with rosters, pay queries, and award conditions firsthand. The same questions came up repeatedly among students and graduates — why is my take-home so much less than my base salary, am I being paid correctly for that night shift, what does the EBA actually say about overtime — and the answers were scattered across PDFs, forum threads, and word of mouth.
I built this site because I wanted a single, accurate, well-sourced reference that I would have found useful myself.
How it works
Salary estimates are calculated from the current public hospital awards and enterprise bargaining agreements for each state and territory. The source documents are linked on every page. Tax and HECS/HELP figures use the current ATO thresholds and rates.
The calculator is a tool for estimation. Your actual pay will depend on your specific roster, allowances, employer, and personal circumstances. Nothing on this site is financial or tax advice — verify figures with your payroll team and the linked award sources.
Accuracy and updates
Award rates change, usually at the start of each financial year. I update the site when new EBA or award data is published. If you find an error or something that looks out of date, please use the contact page to let me know.
